Yes, Forest City would like Dan Squadron, not Tish James, to become Public Advocate

Forest City Ratner does not have a large presence in the current campaign for city offices, though, as I've reported, executives bundled contributions for mayoral candidates Bill Thompson and Bill de Blasio, and for Public Advocate candidate Dan Squadron.

Most recently, new CEO MaryAnne Gilmartin contributed $200 to Squadron's candidacy on July 29, according to campaign finance records. In January, deputy Ashley Cotton gave Squadron $400.

Surely Forest City and its executives do not want to see 35th District Council Member Letitia (Tish) James, the leading opponent of Atlantic Yards, elevated to a citywide office.

Squadron, a state Senator who formerly worked for Sen. Chuck Schumer, has the most money among the four candidates and thus the best chance to use that to establish name recognition in a very fluid race. James has many labor endorsements.

In late June, a poll showed James with 17% of the vote, professor Cathy Guerriero with 16%, Squadron with 8%, and former Deputy Public Advocate Reshma Saujani with 4%, but with 54% undecided.

The first Public Advocate debate is tonight at 7 pm.
